CLEMSON — A baseball scout spent some time chatting with Clemson coach Monte Lee on Monday night, and the discussion turned to the Tigers’ all-important ACC series at North Carolina this weekend.Specifically, they talked about J.B. Bukauskas — UNC’s Friday night starter who boasts one of the best arsenals in the country, and who likely will be a top-10 pick in June’s Major League Baseball draft.“We’re going to see a future big leaguer,” Lee said, referencing Game 1 of a three-game set in Chapel Hill, N.C. “(The scout) said, ‘This is a guy that you could see pitch in the big leagues as early as this summer.’ He thinks he’s that good.“This is a kid that pitches in the mid-to-upper 90s and throws a slider in the upper 80s. You’re talking about a power fastball and a power slider. It’s a heck of a challenge for us.”Of every weekend series Clemson (34-8, 16-5 ACC) has played to date, beginning in February, these three games at UNC (33-9, 16-5 ACC) make up the most important of the Tigers’ schedule thus far. This weekend series has national implications on the line: the Tar Heels are ranked No. 3 by Baseball America, while Clemson is No. 6. And with Bukauskas on the mound, matching up against Clemson’s Friday night starter Charlie Barnes, all eyes in the college baseball sphere will turn toward Chapel Hill.“This Clemson-UNC series is certainly one of the biggest, if not the biggest series in the country this week with it being a top-10 matchup,” said Baseball America college writer Michael Lananna. “The Tar Heels right now are in the driver’s seat in the ACC’s Coastal Division with a four-game lead, while Clemson is still chasing Louisville at the top of the Atlantic. The Tigers are going to be facing the best arms they’ve seen since the South Carolina series — Bukauskas has been virtually untouchable.”Bukauskas — who roomed with Clemson’s Seth Beer on the USA Collegiate National Team last summer — is 7-0 this season and leads the ACC in ERA with a 1.53 mark. He also leads the league in strikeouts with 89 in 64⅔ innings of work. But in Clemson left fielder Reed Rohlman, Bukauskas will face the conference’s top hitter. Rohlman is batting .413 with 14 doubles and 24 RBI.“The one thing that stands out about Reed right now is he’s having a lot of fun,” Lee said. “Which he should be, when the ball looks like a volleyball coming in there. He’s just relaxed.”Following Barnes and Bukauskas on Friday, Alex Eubanks (Clemson) and Luca Dalatri (UNC) will take the mound Saturday. Sunday will pit Clemson lefty Pat Krall against an unannounced UNC starter.Lee said that anytime Barnes takes the mound for a series opener, the Tigers are immediately confident he will give Clemson an early advantage for the weekend. Lananna indicated he thought UNC had the edge overall, and added that Clemson’s key will be tapping into UNC’s bullpen early.“I’d give the Tigers the edge on Sunday — UNC has yet to find a consistent Sunday starter, while Krall has been pretty steady for Clemson,” Lananna said. “As the higher ranked team playing on its home field, UNC has to be the favorite, but Clemson’s got as good a chance as any to deal the Tar Heels their first ACC series loss of the year.” Follow Grace Raynor on Twitter @gmraynor.

In the 1950s, the University of South Carolina expanded its reach across the state by establishing branch campuses under the auspices of the University of South Carolina System. Clemson, having obtained university status in 1964, established a branch campus in Sumter and formed a two-year transfer partnership with Greenville Technical College. House Speaker Sol Blatt was alarmed by the spread of Clemson and declared that South Carolina “should build as many two-year colleges over the state as rapidly as possible to prevent the expansion of Clemson schools for the Clemson people.” Accordingly, the University of South Carolina began a new wave of expansion across the state and was aided by the fact that the Clemson Sumter extension suffered from low enrollment. In 1973, Sumter officials negotiated an agreement between USC and Clemson for the school to join the USC branch system.

2000: “The Catch II”/”The Push-off” In 2000, Trailing late in the game 14-13, Clemson quarterback Woody Dantzler connected with wide-receiver Rod Gardner for a 50-yard reception to Carolina’s 8-yard line with 10 seconds remaining. Carolina fans point to a replay that seems to show Gardner pushing off the Gamecock defender, but Clemson fans contend that the contact was mutual and incidental. No penalty flag was thrown on the play, leaving Clemson kicker Aaron Hunt to kick a 25-yard field goal that gave Clemson a 16-14 win. Clemson fans remember this game as “The Catch II” while Carolina fans call it “The Push-Off Game”.
