There are other brain games that can be played without any cards at all, making them perfect for car trips. Another memory game is a game where one player sets a certain rhythm, either by clapping, or by saying an alphabet word, and then the other player has to remember the first thing and add to it. For example, Player A might say, “Apple.” Player B would then say, “Apple, banana.” When the play goes back to Player A, they have to remember the first two words of the chain and then add on another word, like “coconut.” You can make a memory game be about whatever you like. The main challenge is to try and remember everything correctly. These aren’t the only kind of brain games out there, either. Many popular board games are actually brain games because players have to use their memory or problem-solving skills to win.

Travel is something we’re very passionate about in our family. Since we’re all about making travel fun, engaging and memorable, it’s nice to play games while we’re in the car together on vacation. Technology is wonderful to have on the road, too – but I’m all about keeping it at a minimum. We thought it would be fun to create a video with our top five favorite games to play while traveling. We opted to shoot our video in the car – which is parked in our driveway – while we dished on our faves!! Hope you enjoy!!

Brain games are special kinds of games that exercise your mind while you play. In fact, you’ve probably already played brain games without realizing it. One of the most popular brain games is called a matching game. This is when a deck of cards containing pairs of images or shapes are spread out face down in front of the player, so only the backs of the cards are visible. The object of the game is to flip over two cards at a time and try to find the matching images. There’s a catch, though! If the two cards that were flipped over don’t match, they have to be put face down again, and it’s up to the player to remember what images were on them.

I think we all have a good time playing games like Cards Against Humanity, but it’s hard to play in a cramped car while one of us is responsible for keeping the rest of us alive. So, play a few games that will have you laughing, and let you keep your eyes on the road (and yeah, take lots of selfies).

When I was a kid, there were few things better than getting to spend a few uninterrupted hours playing Pokemon on my Gameboy, grooving to the latest NOW! CD, or playing tiny board games with my sister. But now, most of us spend our car trips either driving, or glued to our phones the whole time. That’s perfectly fine — we all know how important car selfies are. But isn’t taking a holiday road trip with your friends also an opportunity to, I don’t know, actually talk to your friends?

While brain games are designed to help train your brain to recognize and track tricky patterns, brain-teasers and riddles are meant to help you think critically. The great mathematician Archimedes used brain-teasers to help his students think better. Some brain-teasers are still based on math and are solved like a math puzzle, but brain-teasers can also be funny jokes. You can play brain-teasers with your siblings or your parents to help make a dull car ride more interesting. You can come up with your own brain-teasers, or you can find some online.

Everyone in the car has to choose an unusual color for a car (purple, yellow, mint green, etc.), and you get points for every car of that color you see. You could also make the game interesting by allowing passengers to steal points if they spot another passenger’s color first. Or, you know, you could hit each other every time you see your color, because adulthood.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of road trip games that don’t require any tools, paper or accessories beyond the open road. We have suggestions for passengers at every age level, although each game can be tweaked accordingly. Even if your vehicle features the latest in onboard entertainment technology, playing a road trip game can be a fun way for you to tune in with your kids during your journey, instead of having them tune out on a movie or a video game. For fun, we’ve also suggested vehicles that are ideally suited for the road trip games on our list.

Before tablets and podcasts, we used games to keep us entertained. For your next road trip, try some of these games to keep you going along the way.

Another fun version of a brain-teaser is called a code. There are many different kinds of codes, and figuring them out is like decoding a secret message. The answer may not be obvious right away, but just like with brain games and brain-teasers, a code can be solved with a little careful thinking. Some codes use one letter of the alphabet to stand for another one, and these are called substitution codes. Pictographic codes use pictures to represent letters. You can even make up your own code by assigning a certain picture or drawing to each letter of the alphabet. No matter which kind of brain-teaser or riddle you choose, they’re bound to make any car trip into a fun one!

Perform this as teams or solo players. You’ll want to utilize road signs, billboards, shop names — any reading material outside the window qualifies as long as it’s spotted on your side of the car. (If you’re the front-seat passenger, focus on the right.) You’ll be looking for every letter of the alphabet, in alphabetical order, although the letter can be located anywhere in the word. Say there is a fruit stand with a sign for Granny Smith apples — there’s your A. The exit for the Brooklyn Bridge would cover B, Road Closed is C and so on. First one to the letter Z wins. If you see “Road Closed,” however, you’ll probably be happy to have the nine other games listed here.

Decide on a common word that will be off limits for the duration of the car trip. It doesn’t have to be a swear word, just a common word that everyone will use at least once during normal conversation. Try words like bathroom, cow, phone, etc. to try and trip people up. You can use real money, or have the offending passenger write their name on a scrap of paper and put it in the jar. The person with the most money or names in the jar has to buy the car a round of drinks at your destination, fill up the gas tank, or do something else of your choosing.

Pick another car on the road, preferably one with a few passengers. Don’t be a creeper, but everyone in your car should at least get one good look at everyone. Once you’ve seen them, take turns deciding who these people are. Maybe they’re ex-circus performers on the run from the mob. Maybe they’re all sister wives on the way to a wedding. Whoever comes up with the most outrageous/accurate/hilarious story, wins.

Laurel Smith, creator of Momsminivan.com, recommends planning ahead and having a list of activities ready to go before you head out. With that in mind, here are 53 things you can do with your kids in the car. Safety Note: just make sure these don’t distract you if you’re the one driving.
