Oh, don’t worry too much about making a car design that is aerodynamic or fall into the trap of the ultimate car or the fastest pinewood derby car design. You wouldn't think that a four-wheeled car would go faster if one of its wheels didn't touch the ground. Or if its axles were bent. Or if it was designed to grind against a wall. But you'd be wrong, and here's the science to prove it.Our old friend Mark Rober—former NASA JPL engineer—has put together an exhaustive video on how to make the very best Pinewood Derby car. Full disclosure, I'd never heard of Pinewood Derbies—wherein Cub Scouts and Boy Scots make little cars and race them down a straight track—before this, but apparently they're quite popular. Over 100 million cars have been made over the last sixty years. AdvertisementAs you might imagine, people really nerd out over how to make the best one, and a lot of it could make your eyes cross if you don't have a degree in physics. Mark breaks it down into extremely easy-to-grasp terms. He also demonstrates an illegal derby car that goes 40 miles per hour. Anyway, if you've got a kid in Scouts—or are clinging to memories of getting smoked—think of this as your ultimate cheat-sheet.

And finally, remember the No. 1 rule of a pinewood derby is that it’s supposed to be fun. While you should always strive to do your best, don’t get caught up in winning. Just enjoy the ride.

At this point you need to scale the design back to something you feel can be done in the time you have available. One alternative to save time is to purchase a pre-cut pine car that has lots of wood on it. Most of the cutting has already been done, like the stock car from pinewood pro, but you can still modify it to your custom design.

Every year I always started our pinewood project by asking my son, “What is your design “theme” for this year?” (Aside from “Dad, let’s make it fast”!). A theme got him thinking and usually helped me look for ideas in the area he was interested in.

If you are building a car with a child, be sure to let them do as much as possible. The more they do, the more they will get out of it. The design stage is a great way to get them engaged in the project. Have fun brainstorming car designs. Let your child be creative coming up with car ideas before picking your final car design.

My son usually gave me simple design ideas like, a cool race car, an airplane, a shark, a pencil, a baseball bat, etc. One year he simply said, “I want a bubble on top”. Another year he wanted grooves on the sides to “channel the airflow”. Still another year he wanted a “tapered look so it was aerodynamic”. Once again, it is important to incorporate the child’s ideas into the car design so they feel good about it.

When you have the final car design picked, you should again draw the top and side view on a piece of paper. You can then use this drawing as a template to cut the pine block. To create the cutting template, cut out the car design that you drew on paper, place it on the side of the pine block and trace it on the block. Do the same for both sides and the top of the block. You can then cut out your cool car design along the lines that you drew on the block.

Make your car slim. If your car is too chunky, there will be lots of weight in the wood, leaving less weight for your weights. You want lots of weight so you can move the center of gravity to the optimal point to maximize inertia.
pinewood derby car ideas 22

Make the maximum weight. Your car should weigh as much as it’s allowed. In most races, that’s 5 ounces. If your car weighs less than that, add coins or other weights.

Remember, a rectangular car is not an aerodynamic design. The most basic aerodynamic design is a simple wedge. If you don’t have time to design a complex car, a wedge will work just fine.

1. Bake the Block: Start with your block of wood, and before you do anything else, bake it in the oven at 250 degrees for around two hours to remove moisture and make it lighter. This will allow you to add weight to the rear of the car where you actually want it.
