If your garage door has started to malfunction, you might be considering installing a new or upgraded door. Rest assured it is a smart investment. In fact, installing a new garage door yields about 84 percent in resale value, according to Remodeling Magazine. In addition to bringing you a solid return on your investment, a new garage door will improve functionality, enhance the appearance of your home’s exterior, and ensure the protection of both your home’s entryway and the contents of your garage. Because installing a garage door is an extensive job that involves some electrical work, heavy lifting and removal of the old garage door, it will likely require working with a garage door professional. Here are some factors to consider as you look to invest in a new garage door:

There is a variety of sizes in which garage doors are available. In order to figure out how to correctly install the garage door that is ideal for your home or business, it is important to know the dimensions of the various sizes that are available. Doing this is extremely important, given that your lifestyle and the intended use of the garage will play a huge role in determining the size in which you should invest. Below are the specifications of standard residential garage door sizes, specifically single garage door sizes, double garage door sizes, RV garage door sizes and commercial garage door sizes:

So it is always best to have a new garage door installed by a professional. Make sure that any contractor bids include the cost of removing your old garage door and installing the new tracks and additional parts listed above. The style and material of the garage door you choose, as well as whether you wish to have a garage door opener installed, will also impact the cost of your final project. Typically, it will cost less to install a steel garage door without an opener than to install a custom wood door with a garage door opener. Recent innovations have also yielded high-tech doors with thick insulation and energy-efficient glaze, as well as finished interior surfaces and other significant upgrades. These are more expensive doors, but they are also extremely durable.

3. What’s the safety factor for the garage door?If you live in a high wind or hurricane-prone area, make sure your garage door can withstand the elements. “Because of their size, garage doors are more susceptible to wind damage than other exterior openings,” says Mark Westerfield, director of product development for residential garage door manufacturer Clopay. Garage doors must have additional bracing, heavier gauge tracking and other necessary hardware to help keep them in place under extreme winds. If you’re buying a new door, look for models that are “storm ready” with a built-in passive reinforcement system, which requires no advance set-up before a storm.  “With a passive system, reinforcement is contained within the structure of the door and is engaged by simply locking the door,” says Kristie Lamay, president of Broten Garage Doors in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Have you considered putting windows in your garage door? Windows can turn an ordinary door into a stunning masterpiece with the right placement. And they allow natural light into the garage, so it doesn’t seem as dark and dank during the day. For optimal light, place windows in the top section or near the third section of the door. Details like trim and panels can be customized on a garage door installation of any material or style for an extra price. Depending on how they’re constructed, these frames and panels can be more than a decorative addition — they can reinforce the strength of the door as well. Some roll-up garage doors offer the option of shatterproof glass or frosty plastic to add a modern touch; some designers create garage doors to pay tribute to the old-fashioned barn doors. Here are some customizations available to homeowners, as well as an explanation of what is included in their cost and installation:

2. Should you buy an insulated garage door? Most garages aren’t heated, but your garage door still impacts your home’s energy efficiency. Construction materials and insulation technologies for garage doors have improved significantly over the last five to 10 years. Today’s doors provide a tighter seal against the façade to keep out the elements. If your garage is attached to the house, your best bet is to purchase an insulated door, especially if there’s an occupied room above the garage. It will help reduce both noise and the utility bills. Also, consider the direction your door faces. If it’s baking in the sun all day or getting blasted by the wind, an insulated door will better regulate the temperature inside.

Standard Single Garage Door Sizes Standard single garage door sizes are somewhat of a myth. For instance, new 7×7 ft garage doors might be unsuitable for sub-frames of older 7×7 ft garage doors. This is due to advancements in operating gears and metrication. Typically, a standard … more

The first thing you should consider when selecting a material for your garage door is its longevity. Although a certain construction material can raise the price of a garage door, it may last far longer than a door made with less expensive material. Look for a door that will last at least five to 10 years. Each door material is offered in four different grades. Single-layer doors are the most affordable, but they are also most prone to dents and breaks. At the other end of the spectrum are costly heavy doors with thick insulation. These doors are expensive upfront, but they can withstand a lot more wear and tear than their cheaper counterparts. Available materials are as follows:

Two Car Garage Dimensions 24 x 24 is the standard dimensions of a two car garage. Smallest being 20 x 20 and as much as 28 x 40. I highly recommend that you measure the size of each car that will be housed in your garage, as car sizes do vary. Also, keep in mind the changes … more

Deana 9 months ago Subject: Garage doors I think garage doors always show their age, there's no “timeless” garage door in my opinion. Walk passed a bunch of houses on your block, bet you could guess the time frame each one was installed based on the style of the door. Good thing is that garage door styles will only look dated after 15-20 yrs and even after that, they still look fine as long as they are well kept. I say go with what you love! replyto Deana

RVs, bobtails and large trucks are not the kinds of vehicles that can fit easily through a single garage door. If you need storage for a lot of items apart from your vehicles, then a bigger size door just might be the right choice for your home or business. If you are constructing a new home, make sure that the garage is a size that will meet you current needs. It is also important to ensure that the garage will have the capacity to meet future needs if a larger vehicle or other vehicles are added to the household fleet or if more storage space is needed in the future.
